Music according to Lexico means “Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion ” For any one reading this who knows me personally, I’m sure they are not surprised to see me writing about music and maybe some of them can attest to my eclectic taste in music, spanning across various genres.
My upbringing greatly influenced my eclectic taste in music, my two influencers are definitely my elder brother and my father(happy father’s day to my papa), two sweet souls who introduced me early to Afrobeat, Nigerian Gospel music, Jùjú, Blues, R&B, Country, Hip Hop e.t.c and then trust the lady she has since expanded her reach.
Fast-track to modern-day, I use about 4 mobile applications for music. I use a paid plan for Apple Music, and free plans for Tribl, Spotify, and Boomplay . I also have two other music-related applications which are: Shazam for discovering new tracks and Musixmatch for discovering lyrics. Hence, I have about 6 applications on my phone dedicated to music (shows you how passionate I am about music 😋). I definitely also have many writing and graphics application. For one in the science profession, I sure am in love with the arts. Stay with me, I’m heading somewhere 😃
Vibes, according to the Merriam Webster dictionary is defined as “a distinctive feeling or quality capable of being sensed“. Another definition from the same dictionary is “to enjoy music“. A myriad of music out there, what vibes do you get from the music you listen to? Does it fall amidst any of the following?: a vibe to do more, be more, give love a chance, give up on love, a funny vibe, good times, belief that anything is possible, reminisce on upbringing, remembrance of your homeland, worship, lost in awe of the creator of a vast universe, life came as a result of evolution? 😁 justice, taking up the war for equity, making the world a better place, spiral down to depression(I hope not) e. t. c .
Lyrics also defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary is “the words of a song —often used in plural“. Another definition of lyrics from the same dictionary is “expressing direct usually intense personal emotion especially in a manner suggestive of song“. The second definition is the focus of this post (Finally! someone says 😀, you needed the introduction durrhh😛😛). Lyrics are everything when it comes to music for me, the power of words, and the way they get your heart pounding 🤩. Let me share with you an example of how lyrics work. A dear friend was playing a track by Big Daddy Mo for me some days ago and the lyrics of that track got me sooo high on laughter and fun. From the lyrics, I got the vibe that I was gonna get spoilt silly with money and vacation to the beach. Although we were in a car and at the least location anyone would take a vacation to😂😂. However, we imagined the waves and tides of a getaway to the beach, that’s to show you how powerful lyrics (words) are.
My two cents would be that we all might need to have a blend of eclectic music, that gives the right and positive vibes we need per time, and ensure that they have amazing lyrics too.
I’m sure you are thinking “why is she talking about positivity alone?“. Admittedly, sometimes your soul is “down in the dumps and cast down“, and yes! there is music that sits with you with the lyrics and vibes for that moment. But, I do not think you want that to last forever yeah?. Life is in phases, so you might want to process whatever you are going through with music as your companion in that moment and phase. But, kindly get out of the dumps and step on the positive vibes again, as there is so much to do than stick too long to negative vibes over a current phase that doesn’t seem to be working, but will definitely be over.
